The report of Brother Timothy to
His Eminence Archbishop Leon Mendetella,
Archbishop of the Dioceses of Baragon

In the year 1437 rumors of the life and works of Brother
Guido began to circulate. The good Brother was a member of the Abbey of Venassi in a tiny village located in the foothills of Mount Crega. These stories came to the attention of His Eminence Archbishop Leon Mendetella. There being a terrible plague upon the land, His Eminence sought to learn if the reports of cures being associated with the obscure monk had merit. His Eminence charged a member of his own Abbey, a Brother Timothy, to investigate the reports of this Brother Guido.

Thus the legend of Brother Guido begins to unfold with the receipt of this, the first report of Brother Timothy.

His Eminence Archbishop Leon Mendetella,

the 17th day of April,  in the year 1437

My Lord Bishop, I beg your forgiveness for not appearing before you in person. My work in Venassi is not done as I have not completed the task for which you commissioned me. I send to you a reliquary which was presented to me by Father Igneous the parish priest of Venassi. I am entrusting the transport of this authenticated relic to one whose path I did most fortunately cross. Lady Barbara Sterling of Blackmoor Keep was returning from a pilgrimage on a route which would pass through your diocese. I have known her both personally and by reputation to be trustworthy and most honorable. She has my complete confidence and I am certain that she is absolutely reliable to deliver this report and the accompanying articles believed to be the final remains of Brother Guido.

While conducting the office of investigation concerning the circumstances of the reported miracles of this good monk, I have uncovered the most mysterious of tales. Under threat of excommunication the following stories were recounted to me by members of the local parish. Prior to Brother Guido’s disappearance his conduct and demeanor did change. It is reported that the gentle loving Brother Guido began absenting himself from the village, spending an increasing amount of time in the high country in complete solitude. He did once return to tell the villagers of a vision he had while fasting in a cave. It was shortly after this that he began living in a tree, insisting that the creatures of the trees were his brothers and the clouds and sky were his sisters. In his vision he saw himself as a conduit of the mysteries of the universe. He proclaimed that anyone that stood beneath his tree and bathed in his holy rain would be cured of illness. It became his custom to partake of food only once a day at the moment the sun broke the crest of Mount Crega. The women of the village would leave a bowl of gruel and a link of boudin at the foot of his tree prior to the first light of dawn. One morning when they arrived all they found were the articles which, by my hand, are now in the possession of Lady Barbara Sterling. The holy member has been identified as belonging to Brother Guido by numerous gentles who, when seeking a healing, received holy rain from Brother Guido and witnessed the source. They testify that it is indeed the fountain of Brother Guido, having seen it clearly on numerous occasions as it rained on the faithful. In his latter days Brother Guido had begin to consume ever increasing amounts of ale so that he could even more generously bless the ever increasing crowds that grew as word of his anointing spread.

The manner of Brother Guido’s passing is of such a nature that I feel as though I must trust no one and commit nothing to the page. Although Lady Barbara knows that delivering this parcel is of the utmost importance, she does not know the contents. Despite its ecclesiastical importance, I fear it would embarrass the lady greatly. I shall continue to collect testimonies of the life and death of Brother Guido.

Your faithful Servant,

Timothy

P.S.

I trust you will enjoy the Brother Guido Shampoo. Vendors who had established themselves in the woods surrounding Brother Guido’s tree enjoyed much success selling Brother Guido’s Anointed Body Products.
