 Forest Maiden V April 25, 2009

April 25, 2009, the last weekend of AS XLIII

It was Blackmoor Keep on one of those weekends when the distance between two groups allows both to hold events.  It was also Grey Niche’s Beltaine, an excellent one-day event but a full day’s drive between southwest and northeast corners of Gleann Abhann.  When Progress and TWO elevations were noted, the inability of being in two places at one time came to mind.  Congratulations to Sir James the Holy and Mistress Genevote Villeneuve de la Fleche.

So, there we were:  We-ta-Wentin, north of Lake Charles LA, most pleasant weather, 73 of our friends - old and new, plus an uncounted number of belly dancers and drummers.  They arrived from Seleone, Ardanroe, Small Gray Bear, Axemoor, Wyrmgiest, Troll Fen, Loch Bais, Fort Polk, Vogelburg and Atlantia.  Amid spices and incense it was Forest Maiden V with an afternoon list.

We were grateful to have THBaroness Bethany Bacon as List Mistress for both the morning Rapier round robin and the Forest Maiden Tourney.  She also assisted as Youth Combat Marshal when Gabriel Bacon took his stand as by-fighter.  Being a youth fighter, his opponents also fought with boffer weapons and Gabriel’s kills were non-destructive.  In the tourney that would both determine the Forest Maiden V Champion and the third Forest Maiden, Bethany was the consort of THBaron Grimbaldus Bacon, whose name was an answer in the day’s Quest.  THLord Jean Louis acted as our field herald for the list as well as the jester.

Sir Rian Mulligan, the second knight elevated in our kingdom was fighting for Mistress Marion Leoncina da Susa, Gleann Abhann’s first Laurel, recently awarded Citizen of Gleann Abhann status, resident of Atlantia.  With silk banners flying aloft Sur Sa’ad ibn Yusef al Hilal, Champion of the first and third Forest Maiden lists acknowledged Baroness Barbara Sterling as his consort.  His second championship won for her the honor of being the first Forest Maiden.  Before the year was out, Sa’ad became the fifth knight elevated in Gleann Abhann.

In last year’s FMIV tourney, THLord Ashikaga Hiromoto won for Lady Ashikaga Kimiko the title Forest Maiden II.   If you’re keeping notes, he also won the FMF-II tourney. On injured list today Sir Ashi would cheer from the sidelines as Victrix van Valkenburg fought for THLady Ashikaga Kimiko.  Interestingly enough, knighthood also came to Sir Ashi just months after winning this tourney.  THLord Lannon MacGillvray placed second in that 2008 list earning both entrance into the first Tournament of Champions.  Lannon fought for his ladylove THLady Katerina Demetrieve.  Then there was this Mongol, THLord Motan fighting for his vivacious Ladywife Aysun.  Pryor Gilbert des Moulins this day would fight for a newcomer, the lovely Chelsea, whose first event was Gulf War 18.

Lady Meadhbh of the Galloglach had a sturdy consort in the form of Lord Thomas Willowby who did not armor-up this day. With household banners flying, Lord Settimio dOlivio fought for both his Aureliana and their young daughter. Lady A’ishe, called the Wombat, requested that Baron Nigel be her consort.  It was his honor to do so.  Lord Titus Lupin donned his brushy helm and fought for Lady Meadhbh of the Galloglach.  Lord Alrekyr Inn Svarti acknowledged Elena Ivanovna as his consort for the list.

Lord Brandu de Santini took up his armor and heavy weapons to fight for Lady Bridgette of Edgefield.  Thomas called Couste’ was fighting for a newcomer Elise.  Unlike other fighters Gabriel Bacon was escorted to the field by not one consort, but two.  Marshal of the field was Lord Diolach Macaree and Drew maintained the list tree.  With the last blow thrown, Sir Rian defeated Lord Brandu and Mistress Marion was acclaimed as Forest Maiden III. Cheers rose,  Kimiko presented the garland, Rian placed it upon Marion’s head and Barbara presented the Forest Maiden III medallion.  Grimbaldus captured third place in the tourney.

It was a rapier morning. THLord Wulfram Forrester, recovering from injury, acted as marshal.  He, Lord Thomas Wilkinson and THLord Aethan Dunmire were delighted to find a new challenge from Lord Brandu in a round robin competition that Brandu won.  Classes included: Herbs – Lady Lucretia DeSantis, Mongol boots – Motan, Persona Development – Marion, Beginning rapier – Aethan, Drumming – Grimbaldus and Melisande.  Axemoor’s Baron Charles Pierre de Bourbon and Baroness Martha Effingham honored us by attending. Yes, it changed from THL to Master Charles to Baron Charles most speedily.

Lord Miles de Warewyk did a terrific job as first time Autocrat.  Baron Nigel de Rothewelle, Reservationist, greeted each guest.  The event token design of a Persian tree of life was taken from a medieval tile.  Lord Broddi Raudskegga delighted the taste buds of all with a large and varied feast of Middle Eastern dishes in one great service that was followed by baklava, Bacon Baklava to be exact.  The meal was refreshing and filling.  Evening entertainment included Lady Melisande of Loch Bais, Lord Bran Finn hua Neill, Finian visiting dancers and drummers.  Blackmoor members Lady Serena and Lady Bridie not only wowed us with their belly dance routine but also crafted the excellent scrolls for the event and conducted children’s activities:  kids scrolls and marshmallow catapults.

Motan’s crossbow won populace choice A&S open and in the event category, Anne Cochrane won for her portrait of a Forest Maiden.   Finian claimed the Bardic accolade.  Young Shannon Van Dee Kamp received a scroll for her Bardic presentation.  Lady Meadhbh was named Quest winner receiving a medallion and lamb Pez dispenser.  Collin Warren claimed second place.  Because of the similarity of names both Alrek inn Suarti and Alrekr Inn Suarti received prizes in the guessing game.  This autumn Sir Rian as the Forest Maiden V Champion may claim entrance into the Group Champion’s List. It is our hope that he wins entrance and excels in the Tournament of Champions.  Congratulations Rian and Marion.

So noted,

Baroness Barbara Sterling
